Marion County Deputies may be assigned to the Jail Division, with the primary duties of securing and care for inmates. In addition, deputies may be assigned to secure the City-County Building and Sheriff’s Headquarters.

Deputies perform law enforcement functions as required in and around the facilities, provide information and assistance to City-County employees and visitors, and other duties as directed by the Sheriff. Advancement opportunities available upon completion of one year of employment.

Examples of Duties

Custody and care of jail inmates

Maintain security in all detention areas, City-County Building,

Sheriff’s Headquarters.

Communicate with inmates’ families, attorneys, personnel

of other government agencies, and the public.

Conduct inmate admissions and releases

Fingerprint and photograph inmates

Escort and transport inmates/visitors

Complete records, reports and forms

Respond to emergency situations within the facility

  • Enter and retrieve computer data
  • Perform searches of inmates and/or arrested subjects
  • Account for inmate/arrestee property
  • Attend regular in-service training session

Typical Qualifications

Be a citizen of the United States

Be at least 21 years of age

Have a high school diploma or acceptable HSE

No felony or battery conviction

Able to work any shift or duty schedule

Successfully complete a comprehensive written exam, physical agility

assessment, and oral interview

Submit to Character and Background investigation but not limited to:

Credit Rating

Previous Employment

Criminal Record

Driving Record

Be in sound mental and physical health verified by a physician designated

by the Agency.

There is no recourse to rejection by the Agency’s physician.

Supplemental Information

Independent judgment is used on a regular basis, with guidance from supervisory staff.

It is the policy of the Marion County Sheriff’s Office if an applicant is unsuccessful in completing any portion of the pre-employment screening, the applicant may not reapply for the same position for the period of one calendar year from the date notified. The duration of the pre-employment screening may extend up to one calendar year depending on number of available positions.
