When I first set eyes on the historic home my family now owns in Avon, I knew it was more than just a property. It was a legacy—a place where past and present could live side by side.

Our home’s century-old walls have seen generations come and go, much like the town itself. Avon is a community that has gracefully evolved from rural farmland into a vibrant suburban hub, while still preserving its small-town charm.

Living here isn’t just about owning a piece of history. It’s about becoming part of a community where neighbors wave as you pass by, kids ride their bikes until dusk, and local festivals bring everyone together. That sense of belonging is why Avon is more than just a place to live. It’s a place to put down roots.

Why is Avon a great place to raise a family?

One of the things I’m most grateful for is raising my children in this town. Avon’s schools are some of the best in the Indy region. They provided my kids with not only a strong education but also opportunities to grow through sports, music, and extracurriculars. It’s a school system that values both academic achievement and personal development, preparing kids to succeed while making them feel like they belong.

As a parent, I always appreciated the supportive network of teachers, administrators, and other families in our school district. From cheering in the stands at Avon High School football games to watching the award-winning Avon Marching Band compete, we saw firsthand how schools serve as the heartbeat of this community. So much so, my daughter decided to come back and teach at Avon Schools, while her spouse serves on the Avon Police Department—two honorable careers in a community that supports both teachers and officers.

And now, as a grandparent, I can’t wait to see what all my grandchildren will enjoy. They might play on the AJAA Baseball fields just down the street from my house or enjoy swimming at the Murphy Aquatic Park during the summer!

Fun Facts

The Town of Avon was actually the first Tree City USA Community in Hendricks County! The Tree City USA Program is an Arbor Day Foundation initiative that promotes the preservation of natural environments.

Avon was officially recognized as a town in 1995 after years of effort by its residents. It is now the youngest town in Hendricks County.

The historic bridge on the Avon Town Seal is rumored to be haunted. The legend says that if you don’t honk your horn while driving under the bridge, you can hear the ghost of a dead mother wailing for her baby.

Life in Avon brings you close to nature—and the bees!

Living in a historic home with acreage in Avon has given me the chance to enjoy hobbies that connect me more deeply to nature. One of my favorites is beekeeping. There’s something both humbling and inspiring about tending to hives, watching the bees work in harmony, and then sharing honey with neighbors. Beekeeping has taught me the value of patience and stewardship—values I see reflected in Avon itself.

This community respects its green spaces and invests in preserving them for future generations. For example, Washington Township Park has been a cornerstone for my family. We’ve hosted birthday parties there, walked its wooded trails in autumn, and attended outdoor concerts under the stars. It’s the kind of park that grows up with you. You start with playground visits when your kids are small, then discover running trails, disc golf, and concerts as they grow older.

And when fall rolls around, there’s no better place than Beasley’s Orchard in Danville. It’s a short drive from Avon but feels like stepping into a Hallmark movie. With apple picking, a pumpkin patch, and a corn maze, taking a trip to Beasley’s is a beloved family tradition. It’s the kind of place where childhood memories are made and adults get to slow down and savor the season.

What are the best local restaurants in Avon?

Avon’s food scene is one of the town’s best-kept secrets, and it deserves to be shouted from the rooftops. We have everything from cozy diners to fine dining, and each place carries a story.

  • Frostbite is our go-to for a casual dinner and ice cream. It’s the perfect spot on a summer night, where kids spill out of baseball games and families gather around picnic tables.
  • Opa! is a must for anyone craving authentic Greek food. The flavors are vibrant, the portions generous, and the hospitality reminds you of family dinners.
  • 3 Agaves is my top pick when I’m in the mood for Mexican—with great margaritas, a lively atmosphere, and food that hits the spot every time.
  • Carl’s Donuts is a classic Avon stop for breakfast or lunch. Whether you’re grabbing donuts with the kids or eating a hearty midday meal, Carl’s has been serving up comfort food for years.
  • And when I’m craving pancakes or a patty melt, Emmy’s Pancake House is my first choice. There’s something about the way Emmy’s serves up breakfast that feels like home on a plate.

These restaurants are more than just places to eat. They’re extensions of our community! They’re where you bump into neighbors, celebrate after a big game, or just sit down for a meal that nourishes both body and spirit.

Explore the arts, festivals, and local culture in Avon!

Avon shines in its arts and cultural celebrations. From concerts by the Hendricks Symphony Orchestra to seasonal festivals and concerts, this town knows how to celebrate life. The Avon Heritage Festival is one of my favorite annual traditions. There’s nothing like standing on Main Street, watching the parade go by and seeing both the history and future of Avon represented in floats, performances, and local pride.

Farmers’ markets are another highlight, whether you’re in Avon or neighboring cities like Danville or Brownsburg. These markets are a great way to get delicious fresh produce, while supporting local artisans, farmers, and creators. Every time I walk through, I’m reminded of how much creativity and entrepreneurship thrives here in Avon.

Avon’s location offers the best of both worlds.

Of course, one of Avon’s biggest advantages is its location. We’re just minutes from downtown Indianapolis, with all the cultural amenities of a major city—museums, sports, concerts, shopping—yet we still get to enjoy the peace and affordability of suburban living.

It’s the best of both worlds. You can take your kids for a hike at Washington Township Park in the morning, then head downtown that evening for a Pacers game, a Broadway show, or a night at the symphony. Avon gives you access to both relaxation and excitement in equal measure.

And if you’re a frequent flyer, Avon is less than 20 minutes away from the Indianapolis International Airport—named the Best Airport in North America for 10+ years in a row.

Looking ahead to future development in Avon.

Avon is growing, and with that growth comes opportunity! New businesses are opening their doors. Schools are expanding, and the town continues to invest in infrastructure. What excites me is that even with change, Avon holds tight to its identity. We’re innovative, forward-looking, and eager to embrace what’s next—without losing the traditions and values that make us who we are.

As a member of the Visit Hendricks County Tourism Commission, I have the privilege of telling Avon’s story beyond our borders. After all, tourism isn’t just about drawing in visitors. It’s about showcasing what makes Avon and the entire Hendricks County community so special.

I’ve seen how local businesses, attractions, and community leaders come together to create experiences worth sharing. We market these events to help foster community and spotlight the incredible opportunities here in Avon. Because Avon has something to offer everyone, whether that’s families visiting for a weekend getaway or new residents deciding where to plant their roots.

Why I Choose to Live in Avon, Indiana

When people ask me why I’ve stayed in Avon for so long, the answer is simple: this place feels like home. Avon is where my kids grew up. It’s where my neighbors have become my extended family. It’s where I’ve learned patience through beekeeping, joy through community festivals, and comfort through local diners.

Avon is a story worth telling—a story of history and growth, belonging and opportunity. From quiet evenings in Washington Township Park to lively nights at 3 Agaves, life here is full of moments that matter.

As someone who calls this town home and proudly serves on the Visit Hendricks County Tourism Commission, I can say this with confidence: “Avon isn’t just a place to live—it’s a place to love.”
