Known as the Amateur Sports Capital of the World and named one of America’s Next Great Food Cities by Food & Wine, Indy has built national reputations around both sports and its growing culinary scene. So perhaps it’s fitting that each fall, those two worlds collide at the World Food Championships.

Four days. Ten championship categories. Hundreds of competitors. And more ways than ever to experience Food Sport in Indy.

The World Food Championships returns to Indianapolis October 15-18, bringing together some of the best chefs, cooks, and pitmasters from around the world for four days of high-stakes competition.

But WFC is about more than watching competitors battle for championship titles. This year brings new competitions, experiences, and opportunities for fans to get closer to the action.

If you’re thinking about seeing the action, here are five reasons to experience the World Food Championships in Indianapolis.

1. See the Best in Food Sport Compete for the Win

At the heart of WFC is the competition.

More than 350 teams and 1,000 competitors will take on 10 championship categories and ancillary challenges — including Barbecue, Burger, Chef, Dessert, Live Fire, Seafood, and more — battling through Opening Rounds and Final Rounds in pursuit of a World Food Championship title.

You’ll see the pressure, the strategy, and the skill unfold right in front of you as some of the world’s best culinary talent compete for more than $400,000 in prize money. And you never know when you might be watching the next World Champion or TV star!

2. Join the Action at Burger Battle & Dessert Smash

Two brand-new experiences are bringing fans directly into the competition.

On Thursday, October 15, the inaugural Burger Battle takes over the Kitchen Arena, where competitors will serve slider-sized burgers and fans will get the chance to taste the entries and cast their votes in the People’s Choice competition.

Then, on Friday, October 16, Dessert Smash puts the spotlight on WFC’s Dessert competitors with an opportunity for fans to sample their sweet creations while watching the competition unfold.

These aren’t just competitions to watch; they’re experiences you can taste!

3. Watch Culinary Skills Put to the Test

How fast can a chef work? How precise are their skills? And what happens when the clock is ticking? Find out at the new Culinary Combine, happening throughout all four days of WFC.

In a city that knows a thing or two about combines, the Culinary Combine puts a food-inspired twist on the format. This new competition challenges participants through a series of timed culinary skill stations designed to test speed, precision, technique, and execution.

It’s a completely different way to see what it takes to excel in the kitchen — and another reason to keep your eyes on the action throughout the weekend.

4. Discover the Flavors of Indiana

WFC is also celebrating the incredible food companies that call Indiana home.

The new Taste of Indiana Zone will feature 30+ homegrown Hoosier companies, giving attendees opportunities to sample products, discover new brands, meet the people behind them, experience live product demonstrations, and more.

The Sysco Stage will serve as a hub for demonstrations and culinary programming throughout the event, creating another place for fans to gather, taste, and discover.

Whether you’re a lifelong Hoosier or visiting Indianapolis for the first time, the Taste of Indiana Zone is a chance to experience the state through the people and products shaping its food culture.

5. Experience Food Sport Like Never Before

The best reason to come to WFC?

There’s simply nothing else quite like it.

For four days, the Indiana State Fairgrounds & Event Center becomes a festival celebration of competition, music, food, flavor, and culinary talent. You can watch championship battles, taste food from competitors and Indiana brands, discover new products, meet culinary personalities, and experience the energy that comes from putting hundreds of passionate food competitors under one roof.

And with new experiences like Burger Battle, Dessert Smash, Culinary Combine, and the Taste of Indiana Zone joining the championship, WFC is bigger than a competition. It’s a destination for anyone who loves food.
